FOOL ME ONCE

I had a thought a moment ago

Or was the thought

From a moment ago

Can we ever know for sure

Mixed in this cauldron

Of misdirection and lies

(Politics and business much the same

Which is worse, time will tell, but--)

That passes for a society

The overwhelming thrust

Of constant confusion

Redirecting in ways

We would not have thought of

A single generation ago

Like what

Well, when would we have felt

Buying a car by weekly payments

Would be seen as the norm

Oh, nothing wrong with it you say

I disagree, but what the hey

When a monthly payment

Would be seen as an overwhelming debt

What better way to let it be absorbed

Than in payments of a lesser amount

By-weekly

Or even by the week

The little sharks in black suits

Are carving us up

In ever smaller amounts

(or so it seems)

Will someone finally say "enough"

If payments are somehow normal

When someone lewdly says

-payments by the day-

And still we can't afford it.
